This guide is dedicated to explaining what are the possible graphics card upgrades for Lenovo ThinksCentre M series desktops with 4th gen Intel CPU.

Our goal is to assemble a PC powerful enough to run games like PUBG, DOTA 2, CS:GO and Fortnite with steady 60+ FPS at 1080p resolution.

This guide will include suggestions for both the Tower and the small form factor (SFF) versions of M73, M83, M93, and M93p.

Before we give you the powerful GPUs, we’ll begin with the two GPU upgrade options that make the most sense in terms of price-performance, since they require less power and work with the stock power supply.

  • GTX 1650 4GB GDDR6 – This 75 W GPU is compatible with ThinkCentre M73, M83, and M93p Tower models and does not require any additional power. The GPU will deliver a good 60FPS 1080p gaming experience with many esports titles.
  • The GTX 1650 Low Profile graphics card is the perfect solution for small form factor chassis. It performs very well and delivers a good 1080p gaming experience. The card is compatible with ThinkCentre M73, M83, and M93p SFF models.

As you can see if you have a small form factor ThinkCentre M series desktop, you can still upgrade your graphics card – but because it is a low profile it will be slightly less powerful than the one used inside the tower model.

The SFF versions of these PCs are extremely compact, so they don’t have space for full size (height and length) PCIe x16 graphics cards. However, there is still some room to upgrade your computer if you need a better video output.

Fortunately, with the tower version, there are not many restrictions in terms of which generation of video cards will fit. Because these desktop computers can accommodate a standard ATX power supply, you can install most graphics cards available on the market.

There are two major factors to consider when upgrading your ThinkCentre m73, m83, m93, or m93p graphics card. The first is the type of power supply you have and the second is the size of the computer.

Things to keep in mind when upgrading the GPU

There are some things to keep in mind when choosing the replacement graphics card such as the power supply rating, form factor and the GPU length.

  • While the tower version can use a full height graphics card the SFF is limited to lower profile GPUs.
  • The power supply matters and you have to choose one that will support the power rating of your GPU. For example you can’t run the GTX 1080 of a stock Lenovo ThinkCentre m73 because it is only 280 W. You’ll need at least a decent 450 Watt to power this GPU.
  • It is possible to install a GPU with more than 120 W power rating, but you will need a new power supply and adapter cable between the motherboard and the power supply.
  • There may be USB 3 ports positioned on the path of the video card in some models such as the Lenovo ThinkCentre M93p Tower. So if you get a long GPU it will block them and you won’t be able to use them. However there  are adapter cables that will fix this problem.

Now let’s take a look at some compatible graphics  cards:

Compatible graphics card for Lenovo ThinkCentre M73 upgrade

The Lenovo ThinkCentre M73 comes in two flavors with GPU upgrade capabilities – tower and small form factor. With the small form factor, GPUs can be up to 75 Watts, while the tower can be up to 120 Watts. With the tower version, there is one contingency, if you use a 120 W GPU, you need to draw more power from the PSU. And to do so, you’ll need an adapter cable.

Here are some examples of ThinkCentre M73 compatible GPUs:

GPU  model GPU Power GPU Memory Form factor
MSI GeForce GTX 1650 LP 75 W 4 GB DDR5 Small form factor
EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB SC 120 W 6 GB GDDR5 Tower
GeForce RTX 2060 6GB DUAL MINI 160 W 6 GB GDDR6 Tower
MSI Radeon RX 6600 XT MECH 2X V1 160 W 8 GB GDDR6 Tower

Here we have the same configuration as the previous model. ThinkCentre M83 comes as two versions that can accommodate GPU upgrades – the tower and small form factor. The small form factor GPUs can use low profile with up to 75 Watts power, while the tower can be up to 120 Watts.

Here are some examples of ThinkCentre M83 compatible GPUs:

GPU  model GPU Power GPU Memory Form factor
MSI GeForce GTX 1650 LP 75 W 4 GB DDR5 Small form factor
EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB SC 120 W 6 GB GDDR5 Tower
GeForce RTX 2060 6GB DUAL MINI 160 W 6 GB GDDR6 Tower
MSI Radeon RX 6600 XT MECH 2X V1 160 W 8 GB GDDR6 Tower

Compatible graphics card for Lenovo ThinkCentre M93 and M93p upgrade

Both Lenovo ThinkCentre M93 and M93p allow graphics card upgrades. The tower version is powered by 280 W PSU and will take a 120 watt GPU without a power supply upgrade. The power supply must be changed if you want a more powerful GPU like RTX 2060. Inside the small form factor, there is a 240 W power supply and room for a low profile GPU. There is no need for additional cables or aftermarket PSUs, since LP graphics cards use up to 75 watts of power.
